Fantastic list! I'd actually like to pass on these ideas to our own customers at Earth Class Mail.

Mailing list removal services like CatalogChoice.com and Tonic Mailstopper (formerly GreenDimes, fyi) are useful in addressing one link in the chain that is (1) unwanted (2) resource-intensive, paper-based (3) advertising that requires (4) significant transportation and (5) recycling. The list-removal services aim to nip in the bud the creation and mailing of ad mail we get from advertisers that we're not interested in.

What we do at Earth Class Mail is provide 23 alternative U.S. addresses (and our partners at Swiss Post, or www.swisspostbox.com, another dozen in Europe) at which people may receive mail. When mail arrives, we scan the sealed envelope in full color, on both sides, and send you an email to show you what you have. You can then choose to shred, recycle (environmentally better than shredding), ship, securely open and scan, pick up, and so on.

Thus, we reduce the cost to the environment of delivering either (1) mail you don't want (even the list-removal services don't stop everything, and some are reported, via their opt-in features, to actually *increase*) or (2) mail you do want -- but don't need in paper form.

In short, Internet-powered postal mail adds two key benefits that aren't addressed by our colleagues in the business of reducing mail's impact on the environment:

1. When mail must be or is sent, our service reduces the amount of transportation involved. With neither last-mile residential delivery or a trip by the customer to a post office, either the U.S. Postal Service or the recipient simply flies and drives less.

2. When mail must be or is sent, our service increases recycling from the EPA's average, for mail, of 22%, to around 90%.

That's worth shouting about! I hope your readers will consider it. Customers in 176 countries already love the convenience, or getting mail on their iPhones, or simply having a U.S. business address separate from their home. But the environment is a key motivator of many of our customers.

Great list, Park. GreenDimes is a cool site- amazing how we have to opt-OUT of junk mail rather than opt-IN.

Thanks Calimama. Your are absolutely right. CatalogChoice.org is a great one for opting out of catalogs. I've already updated the post. Thank you for taking the time to let me know.
