The Power of a Simple Image in Telling Your Story of Sustainability

The Spirit Rover on Mars

The imaginative use of photography can tell such powerful stories, especially with green marketing. In this case, when roving Mars was all the rage, we pulled a photo taken by the Spirit Rover from the NASA public website and added the flag from our Water – Use It Wisely campaign.

Our point? Shouldn’t traveling hundreds of millions of miles to look for the essential ingredient for life – water – make us that much more aware aware of our waste right here on Mother Earth?

Does this photo tell you that story?

    Hey Mark –

A single image is a great way to tell a story. And its a cool and creative re-mix you’ve done!

I worry though that your story remains in the camp of moralistic fear mongering that will only speak to the converted.

As a business and cultural storyteller myself, I think we need to learn how to tell kinds of story, that don’t reject the existing state, despite our desire for major transformation change.

You make a good point. That piece was done four or five years ago, and I might approach it a little differently now. However, I do love the irony in the image, which I think can be fun, silly and alarming all at once. Now, I’m off to your post. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Michael.

Michael, I want to download your storytelling manifesto, http://bit.ly/s3LiA, but I couldn’t get it to work. A little help?

I love it! I think it really brings the point home and serves as a reminder to use to be conservative when it comes to the Earth’s resources. It always remind us that not everyone has easy access to clean, safe water – at least it does for me.
