Within each letter are the shattered lives caused by a red light runner

As you race toward the intersection, the green light suddenly flips to yellow. How long do you have? Do you nudge the brakes? Or do you run it?

We’ve all been there. And we’ve all taken that awful risk thinking we can make it. Our irrational sense of wasting time pushes the pedal of adrenaline that over-rides our common sense for safety. This all takes place in a fraction of a second; a blink of an eye that has us careening through an intersection under a bright red light. And at what cost?

This is the story found in each letter of the new “Stop on Red” campaign we just launched for Phoenix Metro Light Rail. The font is made up with the twisted car parts, and the hauntingly injured personal items, found in the aftermath of a red light runner who didn’t quite make it.

A campaign designed to make you stop. And think.

We started by projecting Helvetica letters onto large white sheets of butcher paper, and then tracing the outlines.

In stifling 110 plus degree Arizona summer heat, we scoured junk yards and staged the car parts and pieces back at the Park&Co campus.

We raised scaffolding for the photographer in our creative garage, placed the first large Helvetica-traced letter on the ground, and began to meticulous create our font from our junkyard stuff.

Each letter was photographed and polished in photoshop to make the items as clear as possible. The final artwork featured 6-foot-tall words with the fractured items within life size. So when you stop to examine each letter, you find a mangled steering wheel, shattered head lights, tangled bumpers and dented quarter panels. Strewn among the carnage are even more telling items: A smashed iPod, a scuffed doll, broken sunglasses, a high heel, a child’s hair braid, and other personal effects that tell a more poignant story.

So the next time you find yourself accelerating toward a stale green light, think of what kind a consequence your actions may spell for you and that complete stranger you’re about to meet.

The Route to Success for Phoenix Metro Light Rail’s New Creative Campaign

Jazz PlayerPhoenix Metro Light Rail left the station for the first time around this time last year. It was one of the most successful light rail launches in the country, with more than 200,000 people flooding the 28 new stations along the 20-mile route.

Although we can’t lay claim to Metro’s overall success, we are proud to have played an instrumental role in its branding: “Your Life on Track.”

Now we have a new campaign hitting the streets. I’ve asked our art director, Shawn Hardy, to tell you a bit more about the creative process in creating this beautiful poster campaign.

Basketball player“In concepting the ASU venue posters, we wanted to focus on specific activities and places that METRO light rail puts on track throughout the Valley. Simply mentioning or showing all these would become very dull very quickly and wouldn’t portray METRO light rail as a modern alternative mode of transportation.

The challenge became how to depict activities in an engaging way that would tie them directly to light rail. The answer came from the symbolism found in your route map—common to almost all subway and rail maps. The colorful, curving lines of these maps make an ideal brush with which to paint or symbolize the lifestyle that is now available on track via light rail.

Ballet DancerFrom live music to museums; from sports to shopping; from dining to stage shows—almost any experience or venue can be colorfully created and instantly linked to METRO light rail through the use of these track lines. This instant brand association gives the concept enormous versatility for use in a wide variety of MLR messaging and branding. The simple, colorful symbolism lends itself well to all visual media, including print, outdoor, TV and web. And because photography or detailed illustrations aren’t needed, the artwork is relatively inexpensive to produce.”

Phoenix Celebrates the Largest Opening for Light Rail in U.S. History

Where were you on December 27, 2009? For Phoenix urbanites the date has gone down in history as the day Tempe, Phoenix and Mesa celebrated the Grand Opening of METRO Light Rail.

I’m proud of our agency’s work to help launch this milestone in Arizona’s history.

More than 200,000 people flooded to one of the 28 new stations along the 20-mile system to ride the sleek new trains, marking it the biggest light rail opening in US history. Nearly 4 years in the making, construction started back in February 2005, and became one of the largest public works projects in Arizona.

Some crowd members waited up to 2 ½ hours at some stations to board the trains on December 27, and many believed it well worth their time! With its first successful month of operation behind it, early reports show METRO are meeting and slightly exceeding their projected ridership of 26,000 boardings per day.

Park&Co produced a series of videos for public education purposes in the run-up to Light Rail’s Grand Opening, including a :30 PSA (featured below) using illustrations from local artist Jason Hill and animation from Studio 522, and a longer play Safety Video (also below) which has been shown in driver education schools and high schools across the valley.
